FRED - the annual art invasion of Cumbria took place for the last time this year.

From the 26th September - 12th October 2008, artists from around the globe created new work in some of England's most spectacular landscapes in what became Europe's largest annual festival of site-specific art.

Richard Light and Paul Clark installed 12 lamps on the estuary sands at Blackstone Point that were visible from before sunset until after dark.

The circle was eventually extinguished by the incoming tide. Lamps were placed on the mud to form an ellipse 80 metres long and 10 metres wide.

From the cliff-top viewpoint on the edge of Frith Wood, it was planned that the ellipse would be see as a circle of light, visible from dusk until the lamps would be extinguished by the incoming tide.

Despite the best laid plans, the 'circle' was not fully achieved and appeared as a horizontal ellipse rather than a circle. This was due to the intense wind and rain that threatened Richard and Paul out on the exposed sands and forced them to leave early because of the increasing risk in remaining before finalising the full circle. They made an appropriate retreat to the safety of the cliff top and greeted those who visited.

Thirty people braved the extreme weather conditions and were treated with champagne to toast the success of the event that had refused to be cancelled. It had been planned for a specific tide and sunset on 10th October 2008 and had to go ahead whatever the weather conditions. Over all though, the event was a successful experience.
